Quiet Vacationing: The Real Benefits of Taking Time Off

June is here, bringing with it sunshine, warmth, and the much-anticipated summer vacation. Recently, articles about “Quiet Vacationing” have been everywhere, from Forbes to Reddit. However, they seem to miss the point. As business leaders and professionals, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and overlook the importance of taking a real break and ensuring that your team does the same. Time off is crucial for personal well-being, mental health, and professional success.

Let’s explore the true essence of vacationing and not just the trendy topic of “Quiet Vacationing” that’s all over the internet. But first, let’s address two overlooked items in the “Quiet Vacationing” trend:

Misconceptions about Time Off Requests

Several articles mention that Millennials and Gen-Z fear requesting time off will negatively impact their future careers. Instead of jumping on the “oh Millennials blah blah blah” bandwagon, let’s look in the mirror and at our business practices. Why are employees afraid to request their earned time off? As leaders, we must foster a culture where taking time off is encouraged and valued.

Remote Work vs. Quiet Vacationing

The idea of working from the mountains or beach without informing your manager—often termed “quiet vacationing”—is essentially remote work. If employees are productive, completing their tasks, and not causing tax implications, do they need to notify you of their location? In a truly remote or hybrid setup, why should it matter if an employee is at the beach or by their backyard pool as long as they attend meetings and respond to emails? If there are legitimate reasons to know their exact location, please share them. Otherwise, let’s focus on productivity rather than location.

The Importance of Real Vacationing

In my 23+ year career, I can’t recall a single time I didn’t take a call or look at emails while on vacation. But taking a real vacation, where you disconnect from work and immerse yourself in a different environment, explore your community, or just prioritize rest, is vital. It’s not just about work—it’s about YOU. It’s about valuing your mental and physical well-being, fostering your creativity, and reducing your stress.

Mental Rejuvenation

Stepping away from work allows your mind to reset. It fosters creativity, reduces stress, and can improve problem-solving skills. A well-rested mind is more capable of tackling complex problems and generating innovative ideas.

Physical Well-being

Whether it’s a hike in the mountains, a walk around your block, a leisurely stroll on the beach, or chasing your kids at the community pool, physical movement combined with rest improves overall health. Regular vacations contribute to better physical health and lower the risk of burnout.

Enhanced Productivity

Studies show that employees who take regular vacations are more productive overall and bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. A rested mind and body can tackle tasks more efficiently and effectively, leading to better outcomes for your business.

Strengthened Relationships

Whether you travel with family or friends or travel solo and make connections along the way, vacations provide quality time to bond and create lasting memories. Strong social connections and community ties contribute to longer, healthier lives.

      Plan Your Escape

As someone who enjoys the sunshine, coffee by the beach, and exploring new destinations, I can’t emphasize enough the thrill of planning your summer getaway. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the anticipation, the excitement, and the joy of looking forward to a well-deserved break.

Embrace the Dog Days of Summer

As we dive into summer, I encourage you to plan your escape and take a real vacation. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about giving yourself the gift of time away from work. I understand concerns about falling behind or the pressure to always be available, but remember, your mind, body, and business will thank you. Taking a real vacation is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for your personal well-being and professional success. Perhaps our four-legged friends got it right when “The Dog Days of Summer” was coined. This summer, I will take some cues from Willeaux, and schedule some time off to float in the pool, and enjoy the sunshine!

      Happy summer and happy vacationing!
